Caroline Juler review September 2020 - Elizabeth Haines
Elizabeth Haines has a new show at Canfas. It consists of a handful of relatively large, confidently handled abstract paintings which she has made over the last 18 months and during the pandemic lockdown this year. She says the enforced isolation allowed her to focus better on her work which has so often relied on absorbing herself in local Welsh as well as French landscapes.
But these canvases have come out of larger, wider concerns that the Covid-19 virus has thrown into shocking relief. Concerns such as how far and how fast political ineptitude, greed and narcissism are driving the world to destruction. Concerns such as how blindness to the likely consequences of this ineptitude is a disease in itself.
Given these underlying warnings, it is surprising that the canvases are so full of light. The ‘low notes’ she has spoken to journalists about in her thoughts on this show lie hidden behind layers of white, and of pale, soft lilacs, greens and blues. Her use of lavender infuses a sense of quietude that is inevitably associated with age and a pulling in of horns. These are not bland images, though. There is vitality – and anger – in the violent explosions and spatterings of orange, rust and salmon, and of defiance in the thin black lines. Some of her titles indicate the direction of her thoughts, and it is not submissive: Ship of Fools, Adrift, We Are Such Stuff, Loosening the Moorings.
Everything Elizabeth Haines paints has roots in something else. It is usually based on a sketch or a memory of something seen. This exhibition shows her pulling further and more boldly out into a non-figurative stream that she’s been exploring for a number of years. In any case, the pictures are not all totally abstract: you can make out recognisable shapes in some of the pieces – a prostrate figure, a vessel, clouds, mountains and waves. Many of the paintings were inspired by drawings she did while sailing to Bilbao on the ferry. Elizabeth’s long-term artistic affinities are visible here too: compositional and colouristic references to Ivon Hitchens, Roger Hilton and Roger Cecil. The dark notes are there too if you care to look, and they are her own.

Iwan Bala ‘Ethnograff(r)ica’ Review by Cathryn Gwynn
For several decades. Iwan Bala’s raw, unflinching work has shone a light on issues of culture, national identity, history and politics. One of its hallmarks, of course, is the integration of text – as slogan, poetry or comment – in strong black lettering, in paintings where landscape and figure merge in powerful, urgent messages.
