Martyn Jones

Martyn Jones is a contemporary abstract painter based in Cardiff whose work transforms lived experience into immersive fields of colour and form. His practice is rooted in the physical world, using a personal visual language, “an alphabet of shapes and colour,” to translate everyday perceptions into layered, luminous abstractions.
After completing an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea School of Art in London, Martyn was awarded a Junior Fellowship at Bath Academy of Art. Among his tutors were British artists Patrick Heron and Adrian Heath who helped shape his commitment to colour- driven abstraction.
On the canvas, Martyn explores saturated expanses of colour that are punctuated by jewel-like accents of turquoise, ultramarine, violet and viridian, creating deep, chromatic spaces. A recurring “chalk line” motif reminiscent of a child’s spontaneous mark yet painstakingly built with a tiny brush, reflects his blend of immediacy and control. Through his practice, Martyn is continually searching for a calm transcendence and an elusive, perfect beauty.
