Claire Wigley

Claire is an artist living in North Pembrokeshire who paints her love of the sea and its rugged coastline as the backdrop to her ‘Fabulous Swimming Ladies’ series.
‘I’m a complete chicken when it comes to braving the sea, but my earliest memories are of my aunt Betty coming to Wales and having the best time in the waves at Poppit. While I was young, it never occurred to me she might be self-conscious of her body and others judging her, as a large lady in her 40’s, but to me she was this amazing lady having a great time’.

Claire’s work is about portraying the female form in all its fabulous shapes, and sizes no matter your age. ‘I want to normalise women doing things they enjoy, to show their humour, and courage. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be brave and have a splash in those waves at Poppit too!’

Claire has produced prints and cards from original paintings, which are available from Oriel Canfas Gallery, Cardigan.
